Integrating third-party Top menus into Joomla 1.5 

The Media 65 menu module concept
Came about by many users asking for a third-party Top-down menu or horizontal menu.
The default Joomla menu module has a few shortcomings.
When it came down to customization of the menu notably a horizontal menu.

In Joomla 1.5.X there were some challenges to the core development team to add a more modern menu.
A unordered list type of menu for further flexibility then the legacy versions.
The legacy versions did a fine job of vertical menus but were weak on horizontal menus.

The core Joomla team introduced a new list type menu along with their legacy versions.

This new list type menu works well again with vertical menu systems but has a weakness in its horizontal menu systems.
Being that it’s a good list type menu with a little JavaScript and a little bit of customization one can achieve a very nice horizontal menu.
But there were some challenges when it came down to making it a bit more flexible with different libraries and the CSS styles.

What I have done here is modify the existing Joomla menu module and added the ability to customize the menu to work with many different third-party Java script libraries. By controlling the ID of the menu and its CSS formatting classes etc.

This modification will give you the ability to also have horizontal and vertical menus as you choose through your third-party JavaScript library provider.
