Hi
I'm working on multiple templates at once, for different clients. I'm using the Ravennswood Joomla server to access local host. And then, of course I go into Joomla's admin panel and switch templates for the default. The problem is the Joomla live sites have different modules (in different positions) and different content. But on my local host there is just one joomla installation -- so I can't seem to find a way to have some modules locally for one site and different modules for other sites. Same with content. The home page content has to be different for the different sites, for example. Is there a way to set up different "local hosts" in Ravenswood or a similar local server program? In different windows directories that keep each site completely separated? Or is there just one local host and no way to have additional (virutual) hosts? Or am not being clear????? How do most people using your system keep their sites separate with different admin panels, different modules etc. THanks Rowby |

Hello Rowby,
I don’t official support web servers but I’m happy to give you a hand. You can assign a different template to any “menu section / link” and css styles to page content. Modules can be turned on and off per menu section / links. Joomla at this time doesn’t support two sites per one install. There are tricks that one can do but it not easy for the layman like linking Mysql tables via symbolic links but your MYSQL version has to support it and you need a Linux box. There other thing could do is SSH to the server linking to the DB on your server then mapping the port so you local Joomla thinks it’s local. As for the Ravenswood I have never tested it out so can’t give advice on it. But you should be able to have as many Joomla sites on you local box as you like. About 2 years ago I made a server called the “Joomla starter kit” then renamed 123webkit” You can see more about it here 123webkit.com site. Or more docs at Free JoomlaStarterKit local Joomla web server and templates. This Joomla forum I’m thinking of restarting the project but finding time is not easy plus the support is impossible for one person make a living at the same time. But I sometimes a go into crazy mode and knock out projects with no sleep. This server does support multiple sites and here is how. Free JoomlaStarterKit local Joomla web server and templates. I still use the same setup one of my boxes and it work just great. Though I see the Ravenswood server gets good reviews and if that person has more time and is supporting the server I would stick with it. I’m sure there is a How 2 some where. Also Rowby
Multi site content syndication is not easy do to for a lot of factors. But when it comes down to two main issues. 1. Image | Media paths | link paths 2. SEO double content penalties. There a few other CMS’s that say that can do this but I have not tested out in full. Typo3 Drupal But these CMS are not easy to template. |

I have multiple sub directories for each site I'm working on so I can enter the content for that site and can configure modules and conponents per site.
I know most use a single install the only way to have a single install is with different database prefixes for each site how ever the database will get big |

Yes thats true. Joomla does not support more then one site per install.
I think I once saw a third party help with this but if Joomla changes your going have to make sure that your third party vendor has upgrades. I even thou I do a lot with Joomla there other CMS's that do this but there not easy to work in as Joomla Typo3 is very good at multi sites per one install. But its not easy work not knocking Typo3 the system is super nice. Last edited by admin; 07-19-2007 at 08:26 PM. |
